Reading time:

As its Taino name, 'land of water,' suggests, Jarabacoa is home to numerous lakes, rivers, and creeks. Yet, it is the town’s surrounding waterfalls that truly attract nature lovers from across the Dominican Republic. Among the most notable is Salto Jimenoa Two, a mid-forest waterfall whose nearby suspension bridges offer a thrilling, shaky crossing experience.

Nestled deep within the forested outskirts of Jarabacoa, Salto Jimenoa Dos (or Salto Jimenoa Two) is a 40-meter (131-foot) waterfall, fed by the eponymous river that meanders through the region. The waterfall cascades into a couple of pools framed by the surrounding dense forest and rocky terrain. The site is part of a protected area that also includes a nearby hydroelectric dam harnessing the river’s flow for power generation.

Visitors access the falls via well-maintained trails and a series of suspension bridges, which offer multiple vantage points of the surrounding rugged terrain and the Jimenoa River. While these bridges were once damaged by severe flooding, local authorities have since restored them. Walking across promises a thrilling, if slightly wobbly, adventure as the structure sways with every step.

The paths and bridges provide a chance to explore the dense vegetation along the cliffs that define the area. While the pools directly below the falls are off-limits due to their strong currents and depths, safer spots downstream provide opportunities for wading and enjoying the cool, clear waters.

Located just a 20-minute drive from Jarabacoa, the waterfall is easily accessible, with clear signage guiding visitors to the main lookout. Note that a 100 Dominican peso entrance fee is collected near the parking area and covers access to the scenic trail system and suspension bridges.

For those exploring the region, Salto Jimenoa Uno, a taller, 75-meter (246-foot) waterfall, is located nearby but requires a steep hike to reach. Together, this pair of waterfalls along the river live up to the area’s reputation as a hub for outdoor adventure.
